Wilbur P. Bowen

Served the university from 1896 to 1928, first as a math instructor and later as the first director of the physical education department... Bowen Field House, EMU's indoor basketball and track facility, was named after him in 1955... Left Michigan State Normal in 1891 to become the Director of Gymnasium at the University of Nebraska... Returned to Michigan State Normal in 1894 to become the first ever Physical Education Department Chairman... Went to study at the University of Michigan medical school from 1901-03 where he earned a master of science degree and taught physiology... Returned to Michigan State Normal in 1903 and continued as the P.E. department head until his death in 1928... Became a prolific author with his most outstanding work, "Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology," was used in colleges coast to coast from 1919 through 1953.
