The Eastern Michigan University lost one of its Hall of Fame members when Dr. Walter Gerald Brown passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, after a series of illnesses. Brown, who would have turned 67 August 23 (1967), was selected to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 as a former standout football player from 1954-57. He helped lead Eastern to the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) title in 1954 as both an offensive guard and defensive linebacker. He was a first-team All-League pick in both 1955 and 1956 and was the captain of the 1957 EMU football team that won the IIAC title. During his career he started in 33 of 35 games played. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1960. A native of Hamtramck, Michigan, Brown went on to earn his master's and doctoral degrees at Wayne State University in 1964 and 1976 respectively and spent his career as a mental health administrator. He won numerous professional awards during his career, including being inducted into the Hamtramck Schools Athletic Hall of Fame and also being.
